2018 Volvo XC60 Review: First Drive | News

&Number13;

CARS.COM — The 2018 Volvo XC60 is a new standard for small luxury SUVs. A complete redesign transformed the previously semi-nice SUV to a full sized luxury SUV capable to go head to head with all the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Audi Q5 and Lexus NX. I drove multiple variations of this new XC60 in a preview event in Denver (each our integrity policy, Cars. Com pays to get its own doorstep and accommodation).

Like its larger brother — that the seven-seat Volvo XC90 which we called our Best of 2016 — that the five-seat XC60 is a completely different SUV in comparison to its predecessor. (******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************) is astounding just how much is shared between the XC60 and XC90: motors, a great deal of the staircase, a lot of the inside and many attributes. The XC60 seems just like a mini-XC90, which is a great thing considering the way gushy we get if we discuss the Best of 2016 winner we possessed a year. The kicker is that I feel that the XC60 would be the better purchase should youn’t require the third-row seat.

How It Drives

&Number13;

The XC60 comes in 3 flavors: the T5 (250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder), the T6 with 316 hp from a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, along with also the T8 plug-in hybrid using a 313-hp supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with an electrical motor and battery package to improve total output into 400 hp. These would be the very same motors as from the XC90, however, the XC60 is approximately 300 pounds lighter, therefore it was more responsive and punchier from the T6 and T8 variants I drove. The XC60 accelerates faster to 60 miles compared to the XC90 at each version, rather than by a little step: Volvo states the XC(**********************************************************************************************************************************************), T5, T6 and T8 hit 60 miles at 6.4, 5.6 and 4.9 seconds, respectively, whereas the XC(********************************************************************************************************************************************) T5, T6 and T8 take action in 7.5, 6.1 and 5.3 seconds, respectively.

I did not observe a massive impact in passing power involving the XC(**********************************************************************************************************************************************) 316-hp T6 and 400-hp T8, although from a halt and at lower rates, the T8 offers instant acceleration and increased jolt. Even although the T8 includes a joint 84 greater horsepower than the T6, its own hybrid innards add greater than 500 pounds to get a 4,599-pound curb weight versus the T6’s 4,045 pounds. And as of book, there aren’t any fuel-economy or electrical range amounts out there for your T8, although the T6 is ranked at 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined; that is like other four-cylinders from the course but with a bit more punch in the meatier 2.0-liter.

The XC60’s ride quality recalls the XC90, firm but not bothered using the optional air suspension and flexible stability; Volvo did not supply any standard-suspension SUVs. The XC60 is a bit sportier than the XC90, using more heavy steering and tighter handling which makes it effective at handling mountain streets without being out of place, however it does not attack corners such as a BMW X4 M40I or Audi SQ5. Drivability is not the XC60’s biggest strength, although it’s perfectly commendable.

Top-Notch Interior

&Number13;

The XC60’s biggest strength is your warm, stylish inside with sufficient high quality substances to provide the best interiors in this course a run for their money, such as the Audi Q5 and more expensive Porsche Macan. The discretionary soft Nappa leather chairs, real wood trim and all of the sun that comes in the typical panoramic moonroof make an airy, pleasant area in which to drive. The inside mostly resembles that the XC90 however using a fresh accent panel which runs round the dashboard out of door to door and may be appointed with real wood. The wood, using grain you are able to texture, is highlighted by a matte aluminum-esque border; equally add a fresh dimension to an otherwise comfortable interior.

The backseat is much more comfy than the outgoing XC(**********************************************************************************************************************************************), with greater legroom and a supportive seating place. Under that the outboard cushions is a modest cavelike storage area for telephones, tablet computers or other pocket things. (******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************) is unique into the XC(**********************************************************************************************************************************************), even though I am uncertain of its usefulness. Is it where your devices should go when the battery dies? Because as with all the XC90, there are no USB ports in the backseat for apparatus charging, just a single 12-volt cigarette-lighter-style socket. To be honest, it is not a widely accessible attribute from the course, but back USB ports are not rare in non-luxury compact SUVs such as a Mazda CX-5 (and even if you enjoy luxury cars, the CX-5 is well worth a look).

Technology

&Number13;

Like that the XC90, the XC60’s technologies game is powerful with the discretionary semi-autonomous Pilot Assist II that is a must-have attribute for commuting in traffic that is senile. The machine retains the XC60 based in the lane more ardently than the first Pilot Assist at our XC90, and there is greater immunity in the steering wheel which gives it more of an autonomous atmosphere. Pilot Assist II still needs hands on the wheel, but like previously, the automobile brakes, accelerates and supplies steering assistance on gently curving roads to alleviate the worries of heavy commuting.

(*************************************************************************************************************************************************************) is enormous, vertically oriented touchscreen can also be a carryover in the XC90 also operates similarly, so it takes a comprehensive dip into the operator’s guide to understand its capabilities and also a great deal of time fumbling around searching for icons to become knowledgeable about switching between sound sources or tripping or adjusting the car’s many tech features — it is not something that you immediately know and utilize. Still, the display has a huge cool factor and also the resolution is topnotch; after you are familiarized, it is an impressive and reactive system.

Safety

&Number13;

The XC60’s starting cost of $42,495 to get a T5 is a deal. It includes that candy inside, all-wheel driveway, scenic moonroof and a range of standard safety features, such as forward collision warning together with automatic emergency braking that acknowledges cyclists, pedestrians and huge creatures. (******************************************************************************************************************************************************************) is also a lane death avoidance system and backup camera. Optional gear incorporates blind spot warning, back collision warning, cross-traffic alert and 360-level cameras. Top-down 360-level cameras are not rare, however, the XC60’s is among the greatest with its high resolution and big screen.

Worth The Money?)

I mainly drove the luxury Inscription trim flat on the T6 that begins at $49,695 also provides navigation, a digital-display device panel, four-zone climate control and much more. The ones that I tested together Pilot Assist, Nappa leather, the rocking Bowers & Wilkins stereo, head-up screen, blind location tracking and even more tallied around about $60,000. The XC60 may control $60,000 and still feel sensible considering that the styling, technology and quality inside. It is not any less lavish than the XC90, only smaller and less costly. If you do not want a third row, the XC60 will be your thing to do.
